Paypal ripped me off,
This is a 100% real and true story about how I got ripped off by paypal. I hope this helps you to avoid this situation.
I sold a sony vaio laptop here on ebay for 1290$ on June 21st 2005 item # 6778566711 (check the buyer dobgerd34, his name is Timothy Bonnette and he is no longer a registered user) . The buyer had a verified and confirmed paypal account. He paid with paypal and I sent the laptop. I have a big good record with paypal (and with ebay 63 positive feedbacks - 0 neutral - 0 negative). I am a very honest person by the way. The transaction seemed to go fine until 1 week after. Then I received a note from paypal that said that the buyer used money from an unknown source so the money for the transaction was being held by paypal. A negative account of -1290 was now on my paypal account. No clear explanation from their customer support, and their phone queues were like 20 minutes every time I called to get the same response: I\'m sorry but when you sign for paypal blah blah blah so you\'re being charged.
Ten days ago PayPal charged me the 1290$ and I still don\'t even know why. I am an international student and that money is actually a lot to me. The worst part is that I was supposed to be covered under the \"seller protection program\" from paypal and it is telling me that there was a problem with the signature confirmation so \"Im sorry but you\'re not covered\". After I paid their high fees all this time (I even bought a car with paypal, a 5K car but anyway! imagine the fees for that!) now they just ignore me. Their insurance knows that I sent to the confirmed address but they are not paying me.
To finalize, the most curious part is that they are not chasing the person that used the \"unknown\" source and that has the laptop that is stolen but they chase me, the honest guy that sold a laptop for a really cheap price to help pay his studies. What I learned is that PayPal is one of those big corporations that couldn\'t care less about the people. When they charge you everything is fine, but when they need to respond then youre screwed. Their insurance is now not covering me and I had 1290$ took off from my bank account without no reasonable explanation yet.

PaypalSucks, If anyone believes that paypal is legit, talk to me first. They ripped me off for over $2000 and even though I begged them to close my account, they kept sending me their auto responder emails asking me to update my credit card and bank info on an account they say has been FROZEN WITHOUT APPEAL for the past year and a half. Been calling and sending them emails for almost 18 months to get them to take me off their records and emails...no chance. They are Crooks with a capital C. Why they still have not been shut down is beyond me. If after reading all these horror stories you still want to deal with them...you may just be a prime candidate for a frontal lobotomy! To say I am upset is putting it mildy! Al

<justvisiting>,
I think that buyers should have some protection too. I bought something from a seller who claims that they've sent it. I have not recieved anything at all. I am not lying. I am out $40USD and I am from Canada, so that's alot more than JUST $40 to me. Sice I purchased that specific item I have bought 3 other things off of e-bay using paypal and have recieved those items already. I should have recieved this item by now but since it's been more than 45 days (it's been 54) there is nothing that paypal will do for me. E-bay won't help me because even though the seller is registerd with e-bay and even though it all started on e-bay when she sent me a second chance and then lowerd the price, I paid directly with paypal and not through e-bay. Stupidly. I was new to e-bay I didn't know she could resend me the page with the new price so I could pay with pay pal through ebay. it's stupid. E-bay did try to help alittle, they sent me this link to try to deal with the problem: http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp Maybe that link will help someone. It's about internet fraud and the FBI supposidly monitors the site...

Correct. Here's the problem: PayPal INSISTS that it's "safe" to use them. In fact, their banners used to say "always free, always fast, always safe." They never admit the potential for problems, and instead the gloss it over. They play games with their website, ToS, and SPP. They do this to AVOID telling people the truth and MISREPRESENT the reality of using PayPal to pay for an item. They speak out of both sides of their mouth.
The only people who know the real risks of using paypal (buyer or seller) are those that come here to this site (and others) and read a few thousand pages of complaints. Only do they know the real risks...
And AMAZINGLY, many choose not to use PayPal after they know the risks! ;-)

I am a victim by paypal too and I have read many of these posts that paypal sucks. I agree that paypal sucks too. However, I have been doing some thinking. Since paypal is the middle guy, there is no way for them to find out if the buyer or the seller is the scammer. Where do they need to stand? In the previous case that a seller send a buyer an empty box with delivery confirmation and tracking number, we all believe that the seller is the bad guy. However, how do you know if the buyer is telling the truth? To paypal, it is a no-win situation for them and there will be a lot of pissed off people.
In my opion, paypal and ebay should always stand at seller\'s side since they are the ones paying them the fees. However, they need to clarify to all the buyers that buying an item on ebay will come with a risk, a risk buyer must accept. They need to tell all the buyers that the money is not refundable and let the buyer decide to go thru with it or not. Ebay and paypal should only act as a medium which transfers the money/goods from one to another. Whether the sellers is a scammer or not should have nothing to do with them since the buyer should fight with the seller in their own way. Ebay and paypal should not be the one determining who is at fault. However, ebay/paypal is doing the judge/jury/executioner and that is just wrong.
Bottomline, I think that ebay/paypal is trying to publicize that ebay/paypal is the most secure way to do business (but it is not) and buyers become less awared of the risk involved. Let\'s face it, what is the difference between buying an item from a non-ebay online store and buying from ebay. All buyers need to know the RISK involved in an online transaction.

The same thing happened to me. I sold something to someone in the UK. I told him it would take 8 weeks for him to receive it because he wanted to save the shipping cost. After 6 weeks he claimed he did'nt receive the item. PayPal told me to respond. I was in the hospital at the time so I had my family email copies of the correspondance and the shipping receipt which showed that it was going to be there in 2 more weeks. I even gave them the tracking number to prove it. The long and short of it. they gave him the money back and did not respond to any of my subsequent email inquries. Two weeks later I received a delivery confirmation, so the guy got the item for free and PayPal helped steal it by backing him up not me.
They DO really suck!

I have a claim going now. Buyer in UK filed charge back due to not receiving merchandise within 3 weeks! She was quoted a 4-6 week shipping time due to international shipping. Too bad, I'm screwed b/c she's already filed! Paypal says I'm responsible. I had offered refund if item not received after 6 weeks.
I hate it.
They really do suck.

In the mean time, I'm not asking anyone to send me any personal information. If you do send me any forwarded emails, be sure to edit any names or identifiable information out of them.

Just FYI, even when I'm at work, I don't use canned email responses. I have a bunch that I've typed up myself that I use. I find the stock ones are difficult for customers to understand, and they seem to have a much easier time with my responses.
Ref31, if you are claiming you work for PayPal, you will need to post from a PayPal/Ebay owned IP. Otherwise I will asssume you are posing as a PayPal employee to gain access to people's accounts, and be happy to work with authorities to see to it you spend time in prison with a guy known as Hanibal.
